Business Studies

The Business Studies department at New Heys aims to provide, through a variety of teaching and learning methods knowledge and understanding of the business world. Business is all around us and affects each of us in our daily lives. In Business Studies we aim to investigate the questions of what products are produced, why and how they are produced and by whom. We try and make Business Studies as relevant as possible to students’ own experiences and future careers.

Courses offered to students

GCSE Courses
Applied Business,
BTEC First Diploma

‘A’ Level Courses
BTEC National Diploma
BTEC National Certificate

The vocational courses we offer our students enable years 10, 11 and sixth form students an opportunity to combine the theory of business studies with the opportunity to apply that theory in investigating real businesses in a practical way. The full time sixth form course is accepted throughout industry and universities as the equivalent of one A level for the BTEC National Diploma and two A levels for the BTEC National Certificate. It is also possible to take additional units to take your final qualifications to the equivalent of three A levels.

Both our GCSE and A level courses have been developed in collaboration with leading companies in the industry. The vocational courses we offer will give you skills, insights, experience and expertise which is why vocational subjects are highly sought after by both employees and Higher Institutions.

The subject relies heavily on being able to give students first hand experience of the business world and we believe the best way to learn about business is to get out into the business world. This is done in a variety of ways. The department organizes a large number of trips throughout the academic year. This includes places as diverse as Eurodisney, Cadbury’s world, John Lennon Airport, Scottish Power and Marriott Hotels. Our sixth form students usually combine their business studies qualification with one of the many Academies the school offers.

Assessment for the GCSE course is a mixture of portfolio work and external assessment. Assessment for BTEC courses is all portfolio work. This means you can tailor your work to the types of business that interest you, and also means you will be working much more independently.

Extra Curricular

One of the major exciting projects students are invited to participate in is “ Young Enterprise" and the “ Enterprise Olympics". Young Enterprise is a national initiative which gives students first hand experience in starting up and running their own business. The “Enterprise Olympics" is a local initiative and competition which enables students to research and investigate their own business idea and then to present this to leading entrepreneurs in a ‘Dragons Den’ style competition.
