On Wednesday 15th November Mr. Parry Lead Learner of Design and Technology took a group of Year 9 girls to Liverpool Football club to take part in GETSET 2006. GETSET stands for Girls Entering Tomorrow’s Science, Engineering and Technology.

The day involved the girls taking part in a range of science, engineering and technology activities based around the following scenario:
“A fashion show is to be held at Liverpool Football Club for the footballers’ wives, girlfriends and their families. Unfortunately, things are not going to plan. The organisers are looking for a team of people who can cope with problems as they arise, can you help?

The girls joined up with other girls from a range of other schools across Merseyside to complete 20 activities. The first 10 activities took place in the Paisley Suite and were based around engineering. Activities included things like ‘the catwalk’, were they had to build a structure to extend the catwalk by two meters using dexion. Another activity included the ‘hooped skirt’, the scenario was the hoooped underskirt had been left at the dressmakers and the girls had to come up with design using whatever material they could find to make a new underskirt.

After a nice Heath Coats lunch in the Champions Suite the girls got back to work in the Shankly Suite were they completed 10 activities based around security and electronics. The first activity to be completed was the ‘remote control vehicle’, they had to design and make a buggy that would be able to carry a camera. The remote controlled vehicle would then film the models as they walk down the catwalk. Another project was the ‘water warning, the girls had to make a moisture sensing device to make sure the fashion dresses did not get damaged.

This is just a selection of activities the girls got involved in on the day. At the end of the day the teams were judged on each activity and the winning team include one of our girls, Paige Loraine. Paige was presented with a usb storage device for her hard work. All the girls who took part will all receive a bronze crest award. BA CREST is a nationally recognized accreditation scheme for project work in the fields of science and technology. The girls were an absolute credit to New Heys and worked really hard with the other girls from other schools to complete all the activities. All the girls returned back to school wearing beaming smiles and are already looking forward to being involved in another GETSET project.
