Information Communication Technology
At New Heys Information Communication Technology is experienced as a separate lesson by all students in each year of their school life. We recognise the importance of the development of ICT skills for the modern world and provide the opportunity for students to use a variety of hardware and software in line with National Curriculum requirements.
In Years 10 and 11 the skills acquired in earlier years are developed further as they progress on to the examination board coursework. Producing portfolios of work and projects based on real world situations provides an understanding of the use of computers in everyday life. Normally students at New Heys receive one period of ICT and are entered for the Using ICT unit. Those choosing ICT as an option receive an additional 3 periods of tuition and are entered for the full National Certificate in ICT. This is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s.
Digital media now play an increasingly important part in our everyday lives and in the world of work. With the National Certificate in ICT, you’ll learn how to manage and present your work in a variety of formats and learn how to use a wide range of software. Skills learnt in this ICT course provide a variety of career options, as well as a route into further and higher education.
Most of us are users of ICT in one way or another. We use mobile phones and send texts. We browse websites, download music files and send e-mails. We take digital photos, listen to CDs, play computer games and may even keep an electronic diary. For an increasing number of people, working with ICT applications is the way they make a living. People serve whole industries by using their skill and expertise in this growing sector.
The National Certificate will give you a solid grounding in many vocational areas of ICT, enabling you to go on to further study or to go into the workplace.
Take a couple, or all, of the six units on offer and you will be at the forefront of an industry that plays an increasingly important role in shaping our lives in the 21st Century. The course will develop as technology advances, and it’s a safe bet that anyone taking the course in ten years time will be learning new things.
If you take the whole National Certificate, there are 6 units, which are equivalent to four GCSEs.
Unit one is mandatory and must be taken by all students. This unit is called ICT Skills for Business. Other popular units involve the following topics; Webpage Creation, Digital Imaging, Database Design, Spreadsheet Design, Multimedia Products, Desktop Publishing, Creating Animations and Creating Computer Graphics. Other units are available for students to choose from if they have a particular area of preference
