It is our belief at New Heys Business and Enterprise Specialist College that all students have the capacity to learn and that all students have a right of access to the curriculum suited to their needs and abilities. The many staff working in the area of learning support work alongside staff and students in mainstream classes to help develop independence, self-respect and self esteem, as well as engaging in a variety of teaching strategies to help students to become more effective learners. The hard working, dedicated team also support students through an individualized reading programme, lunchtime support and activities for the more vulnerable students, and an after school homework/study support club called ‘STARS’. Additional support is provided by support staff from such agencies as SENISS, EMTAS, the Dyslexia Institute, Speech Therapy, Psychology Service, CAHMS, CLD and SEBD outreach etc.
New Heys has resourced provision for Speech and Language and Dyslexia. There are currently 10 places allocated for a city-wide intake for each of the provisions.
What the resourced provision provides:
- Pre and post teaching
- Differentiated curriculum
- Progress monitored and evaluated regularly
- Additional individual and group sessions
- Access to a specialist teacher and speech and language therapist based at New Heys
- Access to a Learning Support Assistant in lessons
- Support in after school homework and study support clubs
- Transport to and from school (subject to LCC criteria being met)
As a school committed to inclusion, special education is not seen as a peripheral or separate entity but as being central to the mainstream curriculum delivered to all students and is the responsibility of all teachers.
It is our aim to make New Heys as inclusive as possible by:
- Involving all students
- Engaging the support of parents and guardians
- Working with multi-agencies
- Having the support of staff and governors
