At New Heys we want our students to enjoy school and through that enjoyment to achieve everything they are capable of achieving. To do that they will need to apply themselves throughout their years with us and develop good habits of study.

The curriculum your son/daughter experiences is designed to provide a broad and a balanced set of opportunities. However, there is insufficient time to achieve everything within the school day and compulsory homework is therefore a school policy. To help with the management of homework we provide a student planner every term.
Homework is set for a variety of reasons including:
- extending and developing the worth of the lesson
- consolidating work done in a lesson and skills learned
- stretching and encouraging all students
- developing good habits of individual study and research
- encouraging independent learning
- preparing for a piece of work to be undertaken.
Homework can take many forms, not just the traditional essay or set of questions. It may be a survey, a questionnaire, a piece of reading or research, but whatever work is set, it will have a very definite and useful purpose for your child.
Parents as Educators
You can help in a number of ways
By providing a quiet area where your son/daughter can work. If that is not possible tell us and we will arrange a room to be available at school. Students have access to a range of resources at snack break and after school.
Checking that your son/daughter has homework to do and signing the Student Planner. If your son/daughter claims not to have homework on anything other than the occasional night, it is worth contacting the school and talking to the Head of Year.
Encouraging your son/daughter constantly and discussing any problems or difficulties. If there are areas of concern and your child does appear to be struggling, please let us know - we do want to help.
